Gayego A Maybe In The 2008 Preakness Stakes; Harlem Rocker Skips Preakness

Horse trainer Paulo Lobo reported Monday morning that a start in the Preakness Stakes by Cubanacan Stables’ Gayego is under consideration.

“I’m going to decide (Tuesday). We are going to have a meeting,” horse trainer Paulo Lobo said from Southern California. “I’m going to track him in the morning, then we’ll make a decision.”

The Arkansas Derby (gr. II) winner Gayego finished a troubled 17th in the Kentucky Derby, in which he had to be steadied in traffic after getting off to a sluggish start. Lobo said his colt never got into the race after his early troubles.

“That’s the reason we are thinking about (the Preakness),” he said. “He’s very happy right now and he came back very sound.”

If Gayego doesn’t run in Pimlico this Saturday, it would be the first time in 60 years the Kentucky Derby winner didn’t face a single Derby rival in the Preakness.

Meanwhile, Frank Stronach’s unbeaten in 3 starts Harlem Rocker will be pointed to the Canadian Triple Crown races, the $1-million Queen’s Plate at Woodbine on June 22, trainer Todd Pletcher said.

“I spoke to Mr. Stronach this morning and we’ve decided to take a conservative approach,” Pletcher said. “We’re going to point toward the Queen’s Plate and we’ll look for some bigger races down the road.”

Todd Pletcher will have a Preakness runner in Lexington Stakes winner Behindatthebar who will be shipped to Pimlico from Belmont Park, home of the 2008 Belmont Stakes, in New York on Saturday morning. Jockey David Flores has the riding assignment for Saturday’s Preakness Stakes.

Other confirmed Preakness entries taking on Big Brown include Giant Moon, Hey Byrn, Icabad Crane, Kentucky Bear, Macho Again, Racecar Rhapsody, Riley Tucker, Stevil, Tres Borrachos and Yankee Bravo.
