Twelve 3-year-olds will be participating in the $350,000 Fountain of Youth Stakes (gr. II) at Gulfstream Park this Sunday, February 24.

The Fountain of Youth Stakes at 1 1/8 miles on dirt is one of the prep races leading to the 2008 Kentucky Derby. Sunday’s edition will feature a number of top Kentucky Derby contenders.

The complete field of horses racing in Gulfstream Park’s Fountain of Youth Stakes with jockeys and weight lines up as follows:

  1. Cool Coal Man ridden by jockey Kent Desormeaux carries 118 lbs.
  2. Golden Spikes ridden by jockey Javier Castellano, 116 lbs.
  3. Court Vision ridden by jockey Garrett Gomez, 122 lbs.
  4. Kentucky Bear ridden by jockey Elvis Trujillo, 116 lbs.
  5. Z Humor ridden by jockey Cornelio Velasquez, 120 lbs.
  6. Ready Set ridden by jockey Jose Lezcano, 116 lbs.
  7. Monba ridden by jockey Edgar Prado, 116 lbs.
  8. Anak Nakal ridden by jockey Julien Leparoux, 120 lbs.
  9. Elysium Fields ridden by jockey Eibar Coa, 116 lbs.
  10. Halo Najib ridden by jockey Rene Douglas, 120 lbs.
  11. Make the Point ridden by jockey John Velazquez, 116 lbs.
  12. Adriano ridden by jockey Eddie Castro, 116 lbs.

Making his 2008 debut, Remsen (gr. II) winner Court Vision is the 3-1 morning line favorite and will carry top weight of 122 pounds. IEAH Stables and WinStar Farm’s Court Vision is 3-1-0 from four lifetime starts. His only defeat coming by a half-length in his debut. Eclipse Award winning jockey Garrett Gomez will take the mount for horse trainer Bill Mott.

Bill Mott also entered Zayat Stables’ Z Humor who finished a disappointing 5th in the Sam F. Davis Stakes at Tampa Bay Downs on February 16. Jockey Cornelio Velasquez will be riding Z Humor this Sunday.

Anak Nakal, trained by Nick Zito, is also making his 2008 debut. He has not started since the Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes last November 24, where he prevailed over Blackberry Road by half a length. Anak Nakal, who is 2-1-0 in 3 starts, will break from post 8 with Julien Leparoux aboard. He is 6-1 on the morning line.

Horse trainer Nick Zito will also send out Robert LaPenta’s Cool Coal Man, who was impressive during his allowance victory at Gulfstream Park last January 26, which was run at 1 1/8 miles.

Monba, one of Todd Pletcher’s Kentucky Derby hopefuls, returns to dirt for only the second time in his career. Monba won his only start on a conventional surface scoring in allowance company at Churchill Downs in November 24. Most recently, the son of Maria’s Mon, Monba, finished 4th in the CashCall Futurity (gr. I) December 22 at Hollywood Park. Jockey Edgar Prado will ride the 4-1 second choice.

The Fountain of Youth Stakes is scheduled as the 9th race in Gulfstream Park’s February 24 horse racing program. Estimated post time is 5:15 pm CST.
