Fierce Wind Ferocious in Sam F. Davis Stakes at Tampa Bay Downs
Making his stakes debut, Fierce Wind, under jockey Cornelio Velasquez, held off 2 rivals on the final stretch to win the $200,000 Sam F. Davis Stakes at Tampa Bay Downs on Saturday, February 16.
The Dixie Union colt, Fierce Wind, can now be considered one of the formidable 2008 Kentucky Derby contenders. Fierce Wind is trained by Nick Zito who also conditions another one of the Kentucky Derby hopefuls, War Pass.
Racing for Four Roses Thoroughbred, Fierce Wind covered 1 1/16 miles in 1:44.13, just under a second slower than when 2007 Kentucky Derby winner Street Sense set the track and race record last year, and paid $8.80, $4.60 and $3.40. Big Truck ridden by jockey Eibar Coa is second and returned $7.60 and $5.60. Smooth Air with jockey Manoel Cruz finished third and paid $4.20 to show.
Horses that also raced in the Sam F. Davis Stakes this Saturday at Tampa Bay Downs: Dynamic Wayne, Z Humor, Wise Answer, Wonder Mon and Honey Honey Honey. Celtic Meal was scratched.
The Sam F. Davis Stakes together with the Borderland Derby are the 2 Kentucky Derby prep races scheduled on February 16.
