Eleven 3-year-olds will race in the $250,000 Southwest Stakes at Oaklawn Park Monday, February 18.
Oaklawn Park’s Southwest Stakes is a prep race leading to the 2008 Kentucky Derby. Horses racing for this one mile event with jockeys and weights are:
Woodford Racing’s Turf War, who rallied willingly for a dead-heat victory in the 1 1/16 Delta Jackpot Stakes (gr. III) at Delta Downs last December 7, will look to solidify his standing as a legitimate 2008 Kentucky Derby contender.
The Delta Jackpot was Turf War’s 3rd victory in five career starts, with the $400,000 winner’s share going a long way towards assuring him a spot in the 2008 Kentucky Derby on May 3 at Churchill Downs.
The Harlan’s Holiday colt, Denis of Cork, trained by David Carroll for Mr. and Mrs. William Warren Jr., is undefeated in two starts. Jockey Robby Albarado will be riding.
D. Wayne Lukas trainee Silver Edition was a disappointing 4th in the Swale Stakes (gr. II) last February 2 at Gulfstream Park. With just 1 win in 6 career starts, would seem to be in need of a good showing to stay in the 2008 Kentucky Derby contenders list.
