West Point Thoroughbreds’ El Gato Malo, ridden by jockey Rafael Bejarano, won the $400,000 Lone Star Derby (gr. III) at Lone Star Park on Saturday, May 10. El Gato Malo was supposed to race in the 2008 Preakness Stakes at Pimlico next Saturday but opted to run in the Lone Star Derby instead.
Trained by Craig Dollase, El Gato Malo raced 1 1/16 miles in 1:43.04 and paid $5.40, $3.80 and $2.80. Leonides, under jockey Richard Migliore, is second and returned $8.20 and $5.60. Samba Rooster with jockey Garrett Gomez aboard paid $2.80 to show.
Three-year-old horses that also raced in the Lone Star Derby: Limestone Edge, My Pal Charlie, Texas Wildcatter, Golden Yank, King’s Silver Son, Ide Like a Double, Real Appeal, Fort Apache, Poni Colada and Isabull.
