El Camino Real Derby at Bay Meadows on March 8

Ten 3-year-old horses will face each other in the $200,000 El Camino Real Derby (gr. III) at Bay Meadows on Saturday, March 8.

The El Camino Real Derby to be run at 1 1/16 miles is one of the three 2008 Kentucky Derby prep races scheduled this Saturday. The other two are the Louisiana Derby (gr. II) at Fair Grounds and the Gotham Stakes at New York’s Aqueduct.

Horses racing in the El Camino Real Derby on Saturday at Bay Meadows with jockeys and weight line up as follows:

  1. Nikki’sgoldensteed ridden by jockey Jon Kenton Court carries 117 lbs.
  2. General Dan ridden by jockey Kyle Kaenel, 115 lbs.
  3. Autism Awareness ridden by jockey Luis Contreras, 115 lbs.
  4. Bamaha Breeze ridden by jockey Luis Martinez, 115 lbs.
  5. Tres Borrachos ridden by jockey Martin Garcia, 115 lbs.
  6. Pleasure Grounds ridden by jockey Chad Phillip Schvaneveldt, 115 lbs.
  7. Behindatthebar ridden by jockey Michael Baze, 115 lbs.
  8. Coast Guard ridden by jockey Aaron Gryder, 115 lbs.
  9. Dreamed Day ridden by jockey Frank Alvarado, 115 lbs.
  10. Master Daniel ridden by jockey Russell Baze, 115 lbs.

Carrying top weight of 117 pounds, Nikki’sgoldensteed was the winner of the Turf Paradise Derby, an earlier Kentucky Derby prep race, last February 9. Regular rider Jon Court will team up once again with Nikki’sgoldensteed this Saturday for the El Camino Real Derby.

Tres Borrachos finished 4th behind 2008 Kentucky Derby contender Yankee Bravo in the January 27 California Derby at Golden Gate Fields. Trained by C. Beau Greely, Tres Borrachos will try again in the El Camino Real Derby with the same distance as the California Derby. Jockey Martin Garcia will take the mount.

Amerman Racing Stables LLC’s Coast Guard was supposed to run in last Saturday’s Sham Stakes (gr. III) at Santa Anita Park but was scratched due to a minor ankle injury. The son of Stormy Atlantic trained by Dave Hofmans was second his last start in the Robert B. Lewis Stakes (gr. II) to Crown of Thorns, who has an injury in his left front leg and is off the Kentucky Derby 134 trail.

The El Camino Real Derby is the 8th of 10 races in Bay Meadows’ March 8 horse racing program. Estimated local post time is 4:15 pm.
