Denis of Cork Wins Southwest Stakes at Oaklawn Park
Denis of Cork, ridden by jockey Robby Albarado for the first time, won the $250,000 Southwest Stakes (gr. III) at Oaklawn Park on Monday, February 18.
The Southwest Stakes, upgraded to a Grade 3 horse race this year, is the first of three 2008 Kentucky Derby prep races to be held at Oaklawn Park. The other two are the Rebel Stakes on March 15 and Arkansas Derby on April 12.
Trained by David Caroll, Denis of Cork finished the one-mile Southwest Stakes distance in 1:37.89 and paid $11.60, $5.40 and $3.60. Sierra Sunset, under jockey Christopher Emigh, returned $9.60 and $6.40. Liberty Bull, with jockey Eusebio Razo, Jr., and Sacred Journey, with jockey Julien Leparoux, finished in a dead heat for third showing $3.80 and $4.20 respectively.
He’s Eze finished fourth in the Southwest Stakes followed by Riley Tucker, Isabull, Gangbuster, Turf War, Royal Hudson and Silver Edition.
