Denis of Cork Gets In The Kentucky Derby 134

With Behindatthebar not running in the Kentucky Derby this Saturday, it paved the way for Denis of Cork to be part of the 2008 Kentucky Derby entries.

Todd Pletcher, who trains Behindatthebar, said Monday that after talking it over with owners Satish and Sasha Sanan, “We all thought 16 days between two races was a lot of pressure to put on a horse.”

Behindatthebar, winner of the Lexington Stakes at Keeneland on April 19, was 17th on the 2008 Kentucky Derby’s graded-stakes earnings list, which determines who runs in the race if more than 20 are entered. Denis of Cork, fifth in the Illinois Derby in his last start, was 21st on the list.

Mr. and Mrs. William K. Warren Jr.’s Denis of Cork, who won his first 3 races before his only defeat, would be horse trainer David Carroll’s first Kentucky Derby starter.

“I am over the moon,” horse trainer David Carroll said. “It’s great news and I am very happy for Mr. Warren and his family and for my staff and my family.”

“Mr. (Satish) Sanan called Mr. Warren this morning to tell him (about Behindatthebar) and then Mr. Warren called me. I’m excited. Now all we need is to get a good post,” Carroll continued.

Before hearing of Behindatthebar’s withdrawal from Kentucky Derby consideration, Denis of Cork’s trainer David Carroll was downcast.

“I’m not certain (we won’t get in), and I wouldn’t want to wish ill on anybody else or any horse,” Carroll said. “Every horse that is in the race has earned the right to be there and we haven’t. If it is not meant to be, we will move forward.”

Jockey Calvin Borel will be taking the mount on the 2008 Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs.
