The 2008 Breeders’ Cup World Thoroughbred Championships at Santa Anita Park on October 24-25 will card 5 races for females on the opening day Friday, October 24. The remaining 9 Breeders’ Cup races, 7 of them open to males and females, will be held Saturday, October 25.
“By shifting some of our traditional Saturday races to Friday, we ensure that Friday stands on its own as an international competition of the highest level,” said Breeders Cup President and CEO Greg Avioli. ” This new format provides a great stage to showcase the talents of the best female Thoroughbreds in the world.”
The Breeders’ Cup also announced Wednesday, February 27, that it has renamed the Breeders Cup Distaff the Breeders’ Cup Ladies’ Classic. The Breeders’ Cup Ladies’ Classic will be the premier race on the Breeders’ Cup Friday program.
Over the past 3 years, the Breeders’ Cup has expanded from 8 to 14 horse races and total purses increasing from $14 million to $25.5 million. The 2007 Breeders’ Cup at Monmouth Park introduced 3 new Breeders’ Cup races and marked the first time that the event was conducted as a 2-day format. In December, 3 more horse races were added to bring the total to 14 Breeders’ Cup races.
