Darley Alcibiades Stakes Field at Keeneland October 3

Opening Day of Keeneland‘s Fall Meeting will feature the $500,000 Darley Alcibiades Stakes (gr. I) at 1 1/16 miles for fillies on October 3.

As part of the 2008 Breeders’ Cup Challenge, Keeneland’s Darley Alcibiades Stakes winner will automatically become one of the Breeders’ Cup contenders for the October 24 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies to be held at Santa Anita.

Puglisi Racing and TYB Stable’s undefeated Mani Bhavan will face 6 rivals Friday in the 57th running of the Darley Alcibiades when she shoots for her fourth consecutive victory.

Trained by Steve Klesaris, Mani Bhavan is scheduled to arrive at Keeneland on Wednesday afternoon from her home base at Fair Hill, Maryland.

A Kentucky-bred daughter of Storm Boot, Mani Bhavan debuted with a 9 1/4-length victory at Delaware Park on July 12. She followed that with front-running victories in the Adirondack (gr. II) and Spinaway (gr. I) at Saratoga under jockey Alan Garcia, who will be aboard Friday.

Only 2 fillies in the field of 7 have tried the Darley Alcibiades distance: Tim Ritchey and Blaze of Glory Stable’s Bon Jovi Girl, winner of the Fairway Stakes at Delaware on September 13 and runner-up to Mani Bhavan in her July 12 debut, and Livin the Dream Racing’s Dream Empress, who broke her maiden on the turf at Saratoga on August 22.

The Darley Alcibiades Stakes is the 9th race in Keeneland’s Opening Day horse racing program on October 3. Darley Alcibiades post time is 5:10. Included in its undercard is the $400,000 First Lady Stakes (gr. I) at 1 mile for 3-year-old and up fillies and mares.
