Curlin Works at Santa Anita Park; Decision To Run In The Breeders’ Cup Classic Yet To Be Made

2007 Breeders’ Cup Classic winner and Horse of the Year Curlin ran 5 furlongs between races on Santa Anita’s synthetic surface Monday, with owner Jess Jackson saying he hopes to enter the reigning Horse of the Year in the Breeders’ Cup Classic.

SBG Global RacebookWith Jess Jackson and race horse trainer Steve Asmussen looking on, Curlin covered the distance in 59.12 seconds in preparation for a defense of his title in the $5-million Breeders’ Cup Classic on October 25.

Under exercise rider Carlos Rosas, Curlin and stablemate Hawaii Calls jogged past the finish line and then galloped to the five-eighths pole, where Hawaii Calls broke off from the rail two lengths in front of Curlin.

Curlin tracked Hawaii Calls to the far turn and easily took the lead before galloping out six furlongs in 1:12.14.

Pre-entries for the 2008 Breeders’ Cup World Championships will be taken Tuesday.

“We want to check him in the morning and make sure his legs are fine,” Jess Jackson said. “Usually if there’s any injury, it would show up the next day. We hope to be able to enter him in the morning.”

Steve Asmussen said he was pleased with Curlin’s workout. “I just checked him at the barn, and he seems good. He’s breathing well, and to this point we’re extremely pleased. Tomorrow is pre-entry day and we’ll make a decision then.”

Curlin arrived at Santa Anita Park on September 28, a day after winning the Jockey Club Gold Cup at New York’s Belmont Park for the second consecutive year. The Jockey Club Gold Cup victory made him North America’s all-time leading thoroughbred money earner with more than $10 million.

“His consistency and durability is something that separates him. It’s amazing for him to look like he does after making $10 million,” race horse trainer Steve Asmussen said. “We take a great amount of pride in him, and to see all the people here react like they did to him today, that’s how we all feel about him back at the barn.”

The Breeders’ Cup races will be run on October 24-25.
