Curlin Wins Woodward Stakes at Saratoga; Could Start Next at Jockey Club Gold Cup at Belmont Park
2007 Breeders’ Cup Classic winner and Horse of the Year Curlin, ridden by jockey Robby Albarado, won the $500,000 Woowdward Stakes at Saratoga Race Course on Saturday, August 30.
Trained by Steve Asmussen for Stonestreet Stables, Curlin covered 1 1/8 miles in 1:49.34 and paid $2.70, $2.40 and $2.10. Past the Point, under jockey Edgar Prado, was a length back and returned $13.80 and $6.40. Wanderin Boy with jockey Julien Leparoux aboard came in third and paid $3.50 to show.
The Woodward is Curlin’s 10th victory in 14 starts. Curlin added $300,000 to his bankroll raising his career earnings to $9,796,800.
“Aside from the Dubai race and the Breeders’ Cup, this is the most important race we’ve won because of the historic nature of this race and its premier contribution to Curlin’s legacy,” Curlin’s majority owner Jess Jackson said. “With all the superstition and the ‘Graveyard of Champions,’ I was glad the horse showed what he is and we won. It was very important.”
“Good horses like Man o’War and Secretariat had problems here,” Jess Jackson continued. “That’s an honor roll of some of the famous and the greatest. I’m glad he showed he was up to it… It certainly adds to his legacy.”
Curlin could make his next start in the $750,000 Jockey Club Gold Cup at Belmont Park on September 27, where a victory would put him over the $10 million mark in earnings to surpass two-time Horse of the Year Cigar, who tallied $9,999,815 in his career.
Other horses that raced in Saratoga’s Woodward Stakes in order of finish: A. P. Arrow, Loose Leaf, Divine Park and Out of Control. Dr. D. F. C. was scratched.
