Curlin To Race In The Jockey Club Gold Cup Invitational September 27 at Belmont Park

Belmont Park’s Fall Championship Meet will have its biggest weekend with the $750,000 Jockey Club Gold Cup Invitational this Saturday, September 27, where 2007 Breeders’ Cup Classic and Horse of the Year Curlin will race in.

SBG Global RacebookCurlin has earned $9,796,800 for Stonestreet Stable. The 1 1/4 mile Jockey Club Gold Cup Invitational winner’s purse is $450,000 and winning it would make Curlin surpass Cigar as horse racing’s top money-earner at $9,999,815 and be the first American thoroughbred to reach $10 million in earnings. Jockey Club Gold Cup runner-up share is $150,000, third is $75,000 and fourth is $37,000 which would not be enough to go over Cigar’s mark.

Last year, Curlin won by a neck over Lawyer Ron in the Jockey Club Gold Cup. A win this Saturday not only gives Curlin the money title but he will also be joining the elite in horse racing history who won consecutive runnings of the Jockey Club Gold Cup: Mad Hatter (1921-22), Dark Secret (1933-34), Nashua (1955-56), Kelso (1960-64), the mare Shuvee (1970-71), Slew o’Gold (1983-84), Creme Fraiche (1986-87) and Skip Away (1996-97). Firethorn won the Jockey Club Gold Cup in 1935 and as a five-year-old in 1937.

The Jockey Club Gold Cup Invitational is a weight-for-age race, with 3-year-olds carrying 122 pounds and older horses carrying 126 pounds. The only horse to get this advantage will be Mrs. William Kilroy’s Mambo in Seattle, who suffered one of the toughest beats in the history of Saratoga Race Course when he lost the Travers Stake by a nose to Colonel John on August 23. Mambo in Seattle is trained by Neil Howard, who won the Jockey Club Gold Cup in 2003 with Mineshaft.

Also likely part of the Jockey Club Gold Cup field are Frost Giant, winner of the Suburban Handicap (gr. I) at Belmont Park in June, Wanderin Boy, who was third to Curlin in Saratoga’s Woodward (gr. I), Timber Reserve, Angliana and either A.P. Arrow or Ravel.

On Sunday, September 28, Belmont Park will have 2 horse races which are part of the Breeders’ Cup Challenge “Win & You’re In” series where the winner will automatically be part of the Breeders’ Cup field for its respective Breeders’ Cup division. Those races are:

$150,000-added Pilgrim Stakes for two-year-olds at 1 1/16 miles on turf where the Pilgrim winner will automatically qualify for the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf. Probable part of the Pilgrim Stakes field are Bittel Road, Dueling Alex, Duke of Homberg (GB), Herr Mozart, Relatively Ready and Show Me the Cash.

$150,000-added Miss Grillo Stakes for 2-year-old fillies also at 1 1/16 miles on turf where the Miss Grillo winner will automatically qualify for the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf. Probable part of the Miss Grillo Stakes field are Ancient Future, Bambolina, Casanova Move, Consequence, Freedom Rings, Maram, Megachurch, Miss Bodine, Our Golden Dream, Pumpkin Shell and Sugar Mom.

The 2008 Breeders’ Cup will be held from October 24-25 at Oak Tree at Santa Anita Park.
