Curlin Makes History Winning The Jockey Club Gold Cup & An Entry In The Breeders’ Cup Classic
Stonestreet Stables’s reigning Horse of the Year Curlin, ridden by jockey Robby Albarado, won the $750,000 Jockey Club Gold Cup Invitational at Belmont Park on Saturday, September 27, and became the first $10 million earning horse in American horse racing history.
Trained by Steve Asmussen, Curlin covered 1 1/4 miles in 2:01.93 and paid $2.80, $2.10 and $2.10. Wanderin Boy, under jockey Alan Garcia, placed second and returned $4.20 and $3.70. Merchant Marine with jockey Cornelio Velasquez aboard came in third and paid $5.70 to show.
The Jockey Club Gold Cup is Curlin’s 11th victory in 15 starts and the $450,000 Jocky Club Gold Cup winner’s share boosted his career earnings to $10,246,800. The 4-year-old son of Smart Strike passed Cigar, who earned $9,999,815 in 33 career starts.
“He just ran his race again and gave me that big Curlin move again on the turn,” jockey Robby Albarado said. “It was tremendous - and very emotional. The bar is set against him every time, but he exceeds our expectations every time he runs.”
“Curlin is in a different league,” runner-up Wanderin Boy race horse trainer Nick Zito said. “I take my hat off to him. He had to be that good today.”
A showdown with reigning Preakness and Kentucky Derby winner Big Brown looms at the Breeders’ Cup Classic in Santa Anita Park. However, Curlin’s connections have expressed concern that the race will be over the synthetic surface at the California track.
“We’ll probably load him up, but first we’ll have to get him adjusted,” said Jess Jackson, majority owner of race horse Curlin. “But it is up to him whether he likes the track and the surface. So, those are concerns we still have. But we’ll consider it now that we’re past this hurdle. That’s the next prospect for us and we’ll give it every bit of attention.”
“If (Big Brown) is truly going to the big race, we’ll have to see whether Curlin likes the track,” Jess Jackson added. “We’re not trying to avoid him and there is always the Clark after that or the Japan Cup. So we have to take them one at a time. I don’t want to risk a horse of Curlin’s stature that we need in the gene pool. So I am being very cautious and doing my due diligence first.”
Other horses that raced in Belmont Park’s Jockey Club Gold Cup in order of finish: Mambo in Seattle, Ravel, Stones River, A. P. Arrow and Angliana. Timber Reserve was scratched.
