Cougar II Handicap at Del Mar Wednesday, July 30

The 2008 Breeders’ Cup Challenge goes to Del Mar this Wednesday with the newly added in the series, the $150,000 Cougar II Handicap on July 30 where the winner will become one of the Breeders’ Cup horses for the October 25 Breeders’ Cup Dirt Marathon to be held at Santa Anita Park.

Raced at 1 1/2 miles, Del Mar’s Cougar II Handicap field of 3-year-old and up horses with jockeys, weight and morning line odds line up as follows:

  1. Fado (BRZ) ridden by jockey Joel Rosario carries 114 lbs. with morning line odds of 7-2
  2. Harlene ridden by jockey Michael Baze, 107 lbs, 20-1
  3. Tissy Fit ridden by jockey Tyler Baze, 114 lbs, 4-1
  4. Trevor’s Clever ridden by jockey Joe Talamo lbs, 110, 8-1
  5. Zappa ridden by jockey Garrett Gomez, 117 lbs, 6-1
  6. Big Booster ridden by jockey Rafael Bejarano, 121 lbs, 8-5
  7. Marsh Side ridden by jockey David Flores, 114 lbs, 6-1

Carrying top weight of 121 pounds, Big Booster is the heavy favorite with morning line odds of 8-5. This year, Big Booster has won the San Juan Capistrano Handicap (gr. II) at about 1 3/4 miles on turf at Santa Anita and the Gallant Man Handicap at 1 5/8 miles on the main track at Hollywood Park.

Big Booster’s trainer Mike Mitchell is planning for a Breeders’ Cup starter in the 7-year-old gelding Big Booster for the Breeders’ Cup Marathon. Jockey Rafael Bejarano will be riding Big Booster on Wednesday’s Cougar II Handicap.

Race horse trainer John Sadler sends out 6-year-old geldings Tissy Fit and Zappa in the Cougar II Handicap. Zappa won the San Pasqual Handicap (gr. II) at Santa Anita in January but has been winless in 5 starts since. Tissy Fit, finished 3rd in the Gallant Man Handicap.

Jockey Tyler Baze will be riding Tissy Fit while jockey Garrett Gomez will be aboard Zappa this Wednesday.

The Cougar II Handicap is the 7th race in Del Mar’s July 30 horse racing program. Cougar II Handicap post time is 5:00 pm.
