Cool Coal Man Wins Fountain of Youth Stakes at Gulfstream Park

Cool Coal Man, ridden by jockey Kent Desormeaux, won the $350,000 Fountain of Youth Stakes (gr. II) at Gulfstream Park, Sunday, February 24, stamping his name firmly in the list of the 2008 Kentucky Derby contenders.

Gulfstream Park’s Fountain of Youth Stakes is one of the prep races for the 2008 Kentucky Derby on May 3 at Churchill Downs.

Trained by Nick Zito, Cool Coal Man raced 1 1/8 miles in 1:49.53 and paid $16.60, $8.40 and $6. Half a length behind, Elysium Fields with rider Eibar Coa returned $8 and $4.40. Court Vision under jockey Garrett Gomez rallied from way back to get 3rd, 6 lengths from Cool Coal Man and paid $3.40 to show.

“Hats off to (Nick) Zito,” Cool Coal Man jockey Kent Desormeaux said. “He gave me a fabulous ride. The horse was trained to the minute and just very attentive to my needs as a jockey. … He’s really learned how to be a professional racehorse.”

Horse trainer Bill Mott’s Z Humor came in 4th in the Fountain of Youth Stakes followed by Golden Spikes, Halo Najib, Kentucky Bear, Anak Nakal, Adriano, Ready Set, Make the Point and Monba.
