Commentator Wins Massachusetts Handicap & An Entry In The Breeders’ Cup Classic
Tracy Farmer’s Commentator, ridden by jockey John Velazquez, won by 14 lengths in the $500,000 Massachusetts Handicap or MassCap at Suffolk Downs Saturday, September 20.
Trained by Nick Zito, Commentator raced 1 1/8 miles in 1:48.97 and paid $2.20 across the board. Won Awesome Dude, under jockey Casey Lambert, returned $4.60 and $3. Cuba with jockey Pedro Cotto paid $2.80 to show.
Commentator’s 14-length margin of victory broke the MassCap record set in 1938 by Menow, who won by 8 lengths.
“If he goes to the Breeders’ Cup, it would be the Classic,” said Farmer. “I would enjoy seeing Big Brown and Curlin take him on. We’ll have to see what Nick says.”
Race horse trainer Nick Zito declined to commit to sending Commentator to the Breeders’ Cup Classic for a potential matchup with reigning horse of the year Curlin and former Triple Crown hopeful Big Brown.
Other race horses that ran in Suffolk Downs’s Massachusetts Handicap in order of finish: Dr. Pleasure, Volcanic Force, Beck and Call and Riversrunrylee.
