Colonel John Wins Santa Anita Derby

WinStar Farm’s Colonel John, ridden by jockey Corey Nakatani, won the $750,000 Santa Anita Derby (gr. I), the West Coast’s major prep for the 2008 Kentucky Derby, on Saturday, April 5, at Santa Anita Park.

“There’s no question in my mind this horse has the ability to win the Kentucky Derby, and he underscored that today,” said jockey Corey Nakatani.

Trained by Eoin Harty, Colonel John ran 1 1/8 miles in 1:48.16 and paid $7.20, $4 and $3.20. Half-length behind, Bob Black Jack under jockey Richard Migliore returned $7.20 and $5.40. Coast Guard with jockey Joe Talamo paid $7.80 to show.

A Kentucky-bred son of Tiznow, Colonel John will be heading home as one of the leading 2008 Kentucky Derby horses on Saturday, May 3, at Churchill Downs. The colt has won 4 of 6 starts and was second in the other two.

Three-year-old horses that also raced in the Santa Anita Derby: Yankee Bravo, El Gato Malo, On the Virg, Shore Do, Meetingwithdestiny, Polonius, Rosso Corsa and Signature Move.
