Favorite Chatain, ridden by regular rider Cornelio Velasquez, outran Miner’s Lamp by 2 1/2 lengths in the $100,000 Hal’s Hope Handicap (gr. III) at Gulfstream Park on Sunday, January 6.
The lightly raced 5-year-old Forest Wildcat horse Chatain won for the sixth time in nine lifetime starts. The bay has a three-race winning streak that began in August and now boasts total earnings of $276,330.
Trained by Angel Penna for owner Lazy F Ranch, Chatain ran the mile in 1:36.39 and paid $4.80, $3.40 and $2.80. 62-1 Miner’s Lamp under jockey Junior Alvarado finished second and returned $39.40 and $18.80. Half a length behind, Actin Good with jockey Eibar Coa paid $7 to show.
Chatain won last year’s Hal’s Hope by a head over Sir Greeley in track record time, but that may not have been his best effort of 2007. He ran fourth in the Donn Handicap (gr. I) a month later, beaten just 2 1/2 lengths by 2006 Horse of the Year and Invasor.
Horses that also ran in the 2008 Hal’s Hope Handicap at Gulfstream Park are: Yes He’s the Man, Olympic, Dr Googles Boogles, Rexson’s Rose, A. J. Melini, Pop Goes the Tiger, Timber Reserve and Elite Squadron. Commentator and Notgonagetemtoday were scratched.
