Champs Elysees Wins San Marcos Handicap at Santa Anita Park
Heavily favored Champs Elysees gets his first American win in the $150,000 San Marcos Handicap at Santa Anita Park on Saturday, January 19.
Trained by Bobby Frankel for Juddmonte Farms, Champ Elysees under jockey Garrett Gomez covered 1 1/4 miles on turf in 2:00.88 and paid $2.80, $2.20 and $2.10. Coming in a length behind, Rocket Legs ridden by jockey Mike Smith returned $4.20 and $2.40. Third placer Obrigado with jockey Rafael Bejarano paid $2.40 to show.
The San Marcos Handicap was the second U.S. start for 4-year-old Champs Elysees. The first being the Hollywood Turf Cup Stakes last December 8 at Santa Anita Park where he finished second after Sunriver. Champ Elysees has won 3 times in 13 starts overall, and the $90,000 first prize pushed his bankroll to $400,457.
Older horses that also ran in Santa Anita’s San Marcos Handicap were: Niagara Causeway, Decado and Ramazutti.
