Trained by Shug McGaughey, Carriage Trail covered 1 1/8 miles in 1:46.77, the fastest clocking since Polytrack was installed in 2006. Carriage Trail paid $9.20, $5 and $3.40. Rallying from last place to finish second, Model, under jockey Calvin Borel, returned $9.20 and $6. Another 1 1/4 lengths back in third, Rosinka, with jockey Jeremy Rose aboard, paid $7.80 to show.
“She will drift out in her races a little bit,” said race horse trainer Shug McGaughey. “I talked to Kent about that in the paddock. Sometime it might have cost her, but she was in front and there wasn’t any sense in fooling with her.”
“I wasn’t going to hinder her by correcting her path,” said jockey Kent Desormeaux. “I just let her drift, and she was happy and she was going fast.”
It was the sixth win in 15 career starts for Carriage Trail, who is owned by Stuart Janney III and Phipps Stable. She earned $310,000 for the decisive win, increasing her lifetime earnings to $644,628.
Other horses that raced in Keeneland’s Juddmonte Spinster Stakes in order of finish: Little Belle, Wake Up Maggie, Say You Will, Jibboom, Sharp Susan, Unbridled Belle and Rolling Sea. Indescribable was scratched.
