California Flag Wins Morvich Handicap & An Entry In The Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint
Hi Card Ranch’s California Flag, ridden by jockey Joe Talamo, wins the $$112,500 Morvich Handicap at Oak Tree at Santa Anita Park on opening day, September 24.
Trained by Brian Koriner, California Flag covered 6 1/2 furlongs in 1:11.10 and paid $47.40, $16.40 and $9. Last year’s Morvich winner Get Funky, under jockey Jose Valdivia Jr., placed second and returned $3.40 and $2.80. One Union with jockey Victor Espinoza aboard came in third and paid $5.60 to show.
“We’ll pay the entry fee and go in the Breeders’ Cup,” race horse trainer Brian Koriner said.
Other horses that raced in Oak Tree at Santa Anita’s Morvich Handicap in order of finish: Rebellion, Siren Lure, Soul City Slew, Desert Code, Ten Meropa, Matto Mondo and Easy On The Eye. Five Star Thief and Tropic Storm were scratched.
