Breeders’ Cup Challenge Races Results at Belmont Park October 1

Elusive Bluff and Maram qualified for the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf and the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf, respectively, by winning the Pilgrim Stakes and the Miss Grillo Stakes, a pair of Grade 3, $150,000 horse races at 1 1/16 miles on the turf at Belmont Park Wednesday, October 1.

The Pilgrim and Miss Grillo were originally scheduled for Sunday, but moved to Wednesday because of weather conditions over the weekend. Both horse races are part of the 2008 Breeders’ Cup Challenge where the winners automatically get a spot in the Breeders’ Cup contenders list in their respective Breeders’ Cup races.

Elusive Bluff Wins Pilgrim Stakes & An Entry In The Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf

SBG Global RacebookElusive Bluff, a son of Elusive Quality, won his debut on September 5, was sold privately to Southern Equine Stable and previously trained by Billy Badgett who saddled him on Wednesday.

“He’s always been a pretty nice horse,” race horse trainer Billy Badgett said. “He’s trained well, but then we got a chance to work him on turf and he jumped up and worked really well.”

Able to sit a stalking trip just outside under jockey Michael Baze, Elusive Bluff bided his time as Show Me the Cash set an uncontested pace under jockey Javier Castellano of 26.06, 51.20, 1:16.83 and 1:41.44.

But when jockey Michael Baze asked his mount, Elusive Bluff responded with flourish for a neck victory in 1:47.91 on the yielding inner turf course.

“He broke nice and he was able to relax and get his feet underneath him,” jockey Michael Baze said. I was waiting for an opening, and once he got it, he went through and blew by them. He’s a pretty smart horse.”

Michael Mareno of Southern Equine Stable said Elusive Bluff will ship to the main stable at Santa Anita Park and race horse trainer Eric Guillot. Although his Pilgrim Stakes victory guaranteed his place in the Juvenile Turf, he may go to the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile on dirt. Both Breeders’ Cup races are on October 25.

Elusive Bluff, who paid $8.90, $6 and $3.30, was followed in order by Show Me the Cash ($15.20 and $5.20), Relatively Ready ($3.10), Duke of Homberg, Pynaformer and Herr Mozart.

Bittel Road, Giant Talent and Scientist were scratched from the Pilgrim Stakes field.

Maram Wins Miss Grillo Stakes & An Entry In The Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf

Online Horse BettingIn the Miss Grillo Stakes, Karen M. Woods’ Maram remained undefeated as she got up to defeat Freedom Rings by a neck.

Trained by Chad Brown, the Sahm filly debuted in a maiden claiming race at Saratoga Race Course on August 25, and won easily.

Wednesday, Miss Bodine led the way to the turn, betting the first half-mile in 48.42. From the back of the pack, Our Golden Dream launched a wide bid, but was carried even wider. Jockey Jose Lezcano, aboard Maram, followed Our Golden Dream, but stuck to the center of the course and the chase was on. She got up for the win in 1:46.12 on the yielding Widener Turf Course.

Maram returned $15.20, $6.80 and $5.40. Freedom Rings paid $9.60 and $6.30.

“I ran her in the maiden claiming race at Saratoga because she’s got a marginal pedigree and I thought I could get away with it,” race horse trainer Chad Brown said. “She could have won a maiden special, but I was going to try to take an edge wherever I could at Saratoga. She’s done something that you like to see in that she has grown and developed a lot since I got her in May. Jose (Lezcano) gave her as good of a ride as he could. I’ll speak with the owner and if everything is good, we’ll look to the Breeders’ Cup. I don’t know about the Europeans, but she seems as good as anything here.”

The Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf will be held on October 24 at Santa Anita.

It was a head back to My Magic Moment ($13.60) in third and neck back to favored Consequence. Pumpkin Shell, Megachurch, Casanova Move, Our Golden Dream, Miss Bodine, Countess Seagrape and Ancient Future trailed.

Laragh and Saarlandisourland were scratched from the Miss Grillo Stakes field.
