Bob Black Jack Comes Back To Race In Vernon Underwood at Hollywood Park November 22
Bob Black Jack, who earned a trip to the Kentucky Derby with a second-place finish in the Santa Anita Derby, will return to the races when he faces older horses in the $100,000 Vernon O. Underwood Stakes at Hollywood Park Saturday, November 22.
The Underwood Stakes drew a field of 7, which lines up as follows from the rail out:
Wiredfortwotwenty, with jockey Joseph Talamo up, carries 116 pounds
Six Pack Abs, Tyler Baze, 118
Noble Court, Mike Smith, 122
Master Daniel, Rafael Bejarano, 114
Bob Black Jack, David Flores, 122
Johnny Eves, Garrett Gomez, 122
Northern Soldier, Aaron Gryder, 118
The son of Stormy Jack, Bob Black Jack, who set the pace before tiring and finishing 16th in the Kentucky Derby, established a world record of 1:06.53 for 6 furlongs at Santa Anita Park in January. He then finished third in the San Felipe and was the runner-up - beaten a half-length by Colonel John - in the Santa Anita Derby.
That effort earned the California-bred a ticket to Louisville along with race horse owners Jeff Harmon and Tim Kasparoff and trainer Jim Kasparoff. A winner of 3 of 8 starts for earnings of $442,925, Bob Black Jack will return to six furlongs in the 28th running of the Underwood.
John Sadler, leading trainer at the Hollywood Park meet, will saddle Noble Court and Six Pack Abs as he aims for a record third Underwood victory. He saddled Olympic Prospect and Frost Free to win consecutive runnings in 1989-90.
Noble Court, winner of the San Vicente (gr. II) in 2007, returned from a 13-month layoff to score a come-from-behind allowance win in October at Santa Anita. Noble Court has only missed the money once while winning 4 of 8 starts.
Johnny Eves, winner of the Malibu last December, will try to snap a 7-race winless streak. Most recently, Johnny Eves finished second in the Cal Cup Sprint Handicap.
Northern Solder and Wiredfortwotwenty will each be saddled by Brian Koriner. Five-year-old Northern Soldier is the most accomplished of the 2 with 5 wins in 19 starts.
The Vernon O. Underwood Stakes will run as the seventh horse race on Saturday’s nine-race program at Hollywood Park. First post time is 12:30 pm. Underwood post time is 3:35 pm.
