Black Mamba Wins John C. Mabee Handicap at Del Mar & An Entry In The Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf

Double Down Stables’ Black Mamba, ridden by jockey Garrett Gomez, won the $400,000 John C. Mabee Handicap (gr. I) at Del Mar Sunday, August 3.

As part of the 2008 Breeders’ Cup Challenge “Win & You’re In” series of horse races, Black Mamba became part of the Breeders’ Cup field allowed to race in the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf on October 24 at Santa Anita Park.

Trained by John Saddler, Black Mamba covered 1 1/8 miles on turf in 1:47.11 and paid $3.80, $3 and $2.40. I Can See, under jockey Corey Nakatani returned $10.60 and $5.80. Passified with jockey Mike Smith paid $3.20 to show.

The 5-year-old daughter of Black Minnaloushe, Black Mamba, improved her record to 4 wins in 20 starts. The $240,000 John C. Mabee Handicap winner’s share increased her bankroll to $599,171.

Other fillies and mares that raced in Del Mar’s John C. Mabee Handicap in order of finish: Foxysox, Solva, Green Lyons, Ransom Captive and Placid Lake.
