Big Brown Wins Florida Derby at Gulfstream Park

Big Brown, ridden by jockey Kent Desormeaux, won the $1 million Florida Derby and stamped his name as one of the top 2008 Kentucky Derby contenders by leading from start to finish at Gulfstream Park‘s feature event on Saturday, March 29.

The Florida Derby is one of the major prep races for the 2008 Kentucky Derby to be held on May 3 at Churchill Downs.

Trained by Richard Dutrow, Jr., Big Brown covered the Florida Derby distance of 1 1/8 miles in 1:48.16 and paid $5, $3.80 and $3.20. Smooth Air, under jockey Manoel Cruz, returned $12.60 and $7.60. Tomcito, with jockey Jorge Chavez aboard, returned $6.20 to show.

Hey Byrn finished fourth in the 2008 Florida Derby followed by Cool Gator, Majestic Warrior, Nistle’s Crunch, Face the Cat, Da’ Tara, Fierce Wind, Elysium Fields and B B Frank.
