ELMONT, NEW YORK (TICKER)–Big Brown’s left front foot showed improvement Monday, putting the Triple Crown hopeful on track to compete in the Belmont Stakes on Saturday, June 7, at Belmont Park.
The Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner Big Brown suffered a minor crack to his left front hoof and has not been on the track since Friday.
On Monday, hoof specialist Ian McKinlay opened the slight quarter crack and inserted stainless steel wire stitches to draw the crack together.
“This morning we stopped and saw him early and lot of heat had come out from yesterday, which is an excellent sign,” McKinlay said. “As usual, just a little bit of movement in that heel is enough to warm the foot.”
McKinlay and trainer Rick Dutrow Jr. were optimistic that Big Brown could resume training later in the week as he tries to stay on course to become the first Triple Crown winner since Affirmed in 1978.
“We can most likely jog him (tomorrow), but I don’t want to do that,” Dutrow said. “I want Ian to look at him again before we actually go to the track. The time he has missed means nothing to me or him.
“This could also be a very good thing because he burnt his heels (at Pimlico) and it gives him time to get over that. No way missing four, five or six days is going to affect the outcome and his racing ability when he runs.”
On Saturday, June 7th, Big Brown is set to make a run at horse racing history at the Belmont Stakes.
