Big Brown Retired To Stud After Injury

Race Horse Big Brown Retired; Will Not Make It To 2008 Breeders' Cup Classic (AP Photo/Ed Reinke, File)Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner Big Brown has been retired after suffering a hoof injury while training on Monday on turf at Aqueduct.

After running 6 furlongs, race horse Big Brown was found to have damaged a heel bulb - an area of soft tissue - at the back of his right front foot.

“Big Brown has been retired,” co-owner Michael Iavarone said. “He not only tore the bulb off his foot, but half the foot was torn off. We did everything we could to get to the Breeders’ Cup. It’s devastating. And what makes it even worse is that he worked great.”

The injury ended the hope that Big Brown would face 2007 Horse of the Year Curlin in the Breeders’ Cup Classic on October 25.

SBG Global RacebookAfter winning the Florida Derby, Big Brown stamped his name as one of the best 3-year-olds when he became the first horse in 79 years to win the Kentucky Derby from post 20.

Two weeks later, Big Brown roared to victory in the Preakness as he moved within a step of becoming horse racing’s first Triple Crown winner since Affirmed in 1978.

However, Big Brown’s chance at history leading up the Belmont Stakes was slowed when he developed a quarter crack - a vertical crack - on the inside of his left front hoof.

The crack was stitched and patched, and it was determined that it didn’t play a role in the Belmont Stakes when Big Brown was eased at the top of the stretch en route to becoming to the first horse going for the Triple Crown to finish last. It was the only defeat in the race horse’s 8 career starts.

Big Brown made his return over the summer, winning the Haskell Invitational and Monmouth Stakes.

“We are disappointed that Big Brown will not be able to compete in this year’s Breeders’ Cup Classic but are glad to hear that he is expected to make a full recovery from the injury he sustained earlier today,” Breeders’ Cup president and chief executive officer Greg Avioli said.

Big Brown is to stand at stud at Robert Clay’s Three Chimney’s farm for the 2009 breeding season.

The 2008 Breeders’ Cup races will be on October 24-25 at Santa Anita Park.
