When it comes to horse racing, Horses Wild has got you covered.
Raced at 1 3/16 miles, the 2008 Preakness Stakes attracted 12 three-year-old horses hoping to derail Big Brown’s Triple Crown aspirations. A Preakness victory for Big Brown could set up a Triple Crown try three weeks later in the 2008 Belmont Stakes.
All carrying 126 pounds, the Preakness entries with jockeys and morning line odds are:
Macho Again ridden by jockey Julien Leparoux with morning line odds of 20-1
Running on the outside has been very good for Big Brown. The son of Boundary won the Kentucky Derby from the far outside 20 post and he won the Florida Derby from the number 12 post. Now, he’ll test himself under jockey Kent Desormeaux from nearly the middle of the pack.
Eleven Preakness winners have come from the number 7 post, the last being Silver Charm in 1997. Silver Charm also won the Kentucky Derby, but was outdueled in the stretch run of the Belmont Stakes by Touch Gold to lose his Triple Crown bid.
Joining Big Brown as the only other horse to also have run in the Kentucky Derby is Gayego, who finished a disappointing 17th at Churchill Downs.
Gayego, the Arkansas Derby winner who is the second-betting choice at 8-1, has recent history working on his side. Smarty Jones (2004), Afleet Alex (2005) and Curlin (2007) are previous winners of the Arkansas Derby who went on to capture the Preakness. Jockey Mike Smith will ride Gayego, who will leave from post 12 for trainer Paulo Lobo.
Behindatthebar, who won the Coolmore Lexington Stakes at Keeneland last April, is the third choice at 10-1.
Four-time Eclipse Award winner Todd Pletcher, who is 0-for-3 lifetime in the Preakness, saddles Behindatthebar. Jockey David Flores rides Behindatthebar, who leaves the 5th gate.
The Preakness Stakes is scheduled as the 12 race in Pimlico’s May 17 horse racing program. Preakness post time is 6:15 pm. Included in its undercard are: the $150,000 Allaire DuPont Distaff Stakes (gr. II), the $250,000 Dixie Stakes (gr. II), the $100,000 Hirsch Jacobs Stakes (gr. III), the $100,000 Old Mutual Turf Sprint Stakes, the $100,000 Barbaro Stakes, the $100,000 Gallorette Handicap (gr. III), the $75,000 Skipat Stakes, and the $100,000 Maryland Sprint Handicap (gr. III).
