The Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner Big Brown arrived in New York’s Belmont Park for the 140th running of the 2008 Belmont Stakes on June 7.
The son of Boundary, Big Brown, will be making only his 6th career start in the 1 1/2 mile Belmont Stakes, the oldest and longest of the Triple Crown races. Big Brown is also hoping to join Seattle Slew (1977) as the only horse to win the Triple Crown while undefeated. Seattle Slew was 9-0 after he won the Belmont Stakes.
In the past 11 years, six horses have won both the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes but were beaten in the Belmont Stakes, most recently Smarty Jones in 2004. Will Big Brown be the 12th Triple Crown winner?
“I’m confident in this horse because of the way he’s run his races and the level of competition he’s faced,” said horse trainer Richard Dutrow Jr. on Monday. “He has become so much better than any of them. And, he has trained and raced in cool weather, so he is still a pretty fresh horse. I really don’t expect to do much more than to give him one maintenance breeze and go on to the Belmont Stakes.”
Hall of Fame jockey Kent Desormeaux was also among those to welcome Big Brown to Belmont Park.
