Atoned To Run in Coolmore Lexington Stakes at Keeneland April 19
Atoned, one of Dogwood Stable’s Kentucky Derby horses and fourth last time out in the $500,000 Illinois Derby (gr. II), has bounced back from that effort in good order and runs next in the $325,000 Coolmore Lexington Stakes (gr. II), the last 2008 Kentucky Derby prep race at Keeneland, on April 19 it has been announced by Cot Campbell, Dogwood Stable President.
“Atoned has been training enthusiastically of late,” said Campbell. “The colt had a terrific work at Keeneland on Sunday morning - breezing a half in :47.1 and galloping out five-eighths in :59.2. It’s obvious he has great affinity for the Polytrack surface, which causes us to want to run in Saturday’s Coolmore Lexington Stakes, a race well worth winning in it’s own right. It is also a nice stepping stone to the Grade 1 Preakness Stakes on May 17.”
Atoned, a stakes winner of $226,757, was second by a neck two starts back in the Tampa Bay Derby (gr. III), which was his first start of the year. Campbell stated that it is likely that jockey Edgar Prado would ride Atoned in Keeneland’s Coolmore Lexington Stakes at 1 1/16 miles. Atoned is trained by Todd Pletcher.
Dogwood’s other Classics contender, Blackberry Road, who was unplaced in the $1 million Arkansas Derby (gr. II) this past Saturday, did not show his usual stretch punch according to Campbell and “it could be that he is weary and discouraged from several frustrating efforts of late. He is back at Churchill Downs, and will run next in an allowance race before we make any ambitious plans for his future.” Blackberry Road is trained by David Carroll.
