Racing on dirt for the first time, the Paulo Lobo trainee, Gayego, was made the 5-2 morning line favorite for the Arkansas Derby after his fine 2nd place finish to Georgie Boy in last month’s San Felipe Stakes (gr. II) at Santa Anita Park. Jockey Mike Smith will be taking the mount on Saturday breaking from post position 5.
Z Fortune, trained by Steve Asmussen, was the 3-5 favorite in the March 15 Rebel Stakes (gr. II) but finished 5th, 9 3/4 lengths behind Sierra Sunset. This will be Z Fortune’s first time to race at a distance of 1 1/8 miles. Z Fortune is not without credentials as he won the LeComte Stakes (gr. III) by 2 3/4 lengths and placed second in the Risen Star Stakes (gr. III) behind stablemate Pyro, one of the leading 2008 Kentucky Derby contenders.
Other Steve Asmussen Arkansas Derby entries are King’s Silver Sun, second to now-injured Sierra Sunset in the Rebel Stakes (gr. II), and Heiligbrodt Racing Stables’ Ablaze With Spirit, third behind another Arkansas Derby runner, Liberty Bull, in the Winstar Derby.
Two runners from the Louisiana Derby (gr. II) are also in the Arkansas Derby: B. Wayne Hughes’ My Pal Charlie (2nd) and Dogwood Stable’s Blackberry Road (4th).
The Arkansas Derby is scheduled as the 11th of 12 horse races in Oaklawn Park’s April 12 horse racing program. Estimated local post time is 5:44 pm.
