Ariege Triumphs Over Golden Doc A in Santa Anita Oaks
Horse trainer Bobby Frankel’s Ariege upset 3-2 choice Golden Doc A in the 69th running of the $300,000 Santa Anita Oaks (gr. I) for 3-year-old fillies at Santa Anita Park on March 8, Saturday.
Third choice in the wagering, Ariege, ridden by jockey Corey Nakatani, who recently recovered from a broken collar bone, covered 1 1/16 miles in 1:42.73 and paid $11.40, $4.60 and $3.20. Golden Doc A under jockey Rafael Bejarano returned $2.80 and $2.20. Third placer Final Fling with jockey Joe Talamo paid $3.40 to show.
It was only the second victory for the Kentucky-bred daughter of Doneralle Court, who began her career in Ireland and England before joining the Frankel barn last December and becoming the beaten favorite in a pair of stakes races on grass. Ariege was strictly a turf performer in her first 5 races. It was her first time racing on a synthetic surface.
“We wanted to try her on this track,” horse trainer Bobby Frankel said. “Grass horses are running good on it. She’s a nice filly. I just told Corey to let her settle and come with one run.”
Aboard Ariege for the first time, jockey Corey Nakatani said, “This is a pretty nice filly in the morning, and Bobby has done a great job with her. It’s nice to be back. You get opportunities to ride good horses like this filly, and they make you look good.”
Divine Legacy came in 4th followed by Seattle Smooth, Briecat, Lovely Isle, Kazamira and Sunday Holiday completed the lineup of the Santa Anita Oaks.
