For those with Triple Crown aspirations, the $325,000 Coolmore Lexington Stakes (gr. II) at Keeneland on Saturday, April 19, may be their last chance to boost their graded stakes earnings in order to be in the 2008 Kentucky Derby contenders list.
Raced at 1 1/16 miles, Keeneland’s Coolmore Lexington Stakes is one of the final prep races for the 2008 Kentucky Derby which will be run on May 3 at Churchill Downs. Three-year-old horses racing in the Coolmore Lexington Stakes this Saturday at Keeneland with jockeys and weight line up as follows:
Atoned ridden by jockey Edgar Prado carries 117 lbs.
Salute the Sarge ridden by jockey Michael Baze, 117 lbs.
Samba Rooster ridden by jockey Garrett Gomez, 117 lbs.
St. Joe ridden by jockey Miguel Mena, 117 lbs.
Racecar Rhapsody ridden by jockey Robby Albarado, 117 lbs.
Felon ridden by jockey Julien Leparoux, 117 lbs.
Behindatthebar ridden by jockey David Flores, 117 lbs.
Riley Tucker ridden by jockey John Velazquez, 117 lbs.
Red Sandy ridden by jockey Jamie Theriot II, 117 lbs.
Jet Set Racing Stable’s Tomcito will be carrying top weight of 123 pounds. The son of Street Cry trained by Dante Zanelli Jr., Tomcito, is making his second start in the U.S. after finishing third in the March 29 Florida Derby (gr. I) at Gulfstream Park. With graded earnings of $151,292, Tomcito is in the 21st position on the list for slots in the 20-stall Kentucky Derby starting gate.
Rushaway Stakes winner Big Glen is not Triple Crown nominated. Big Glen winning the $201,500 Coolmore Lexington Stakes first prize will upset a lot of Kentucky Derby Triple Crown hopefuls. The Coolmore Lexington Stakes is Big Glen’s graded stakes debut.
The son of Repent, Atoned, was 4th in the Illinois Derby last April 5 at Hawthorne Race Course. Trained by Todd Pletcher, Atoned has $130,000 in graded money and will try Polytrack for the first time. Prior to that, Dogwood Stable’s Atoned was the runner-up to Big Truck in the Tampa Bay Derby (gr. III) March 15 at Tampa Bay Downs.
Horse trainer Todd Pletcher’s other Coolmore Lexington Stakes entry is Behindatthebar who finished 5th behind Autism Awareness in the 1 1/16-mile El Camino Real Derby (gr. III) at Bay Meadows March 8.
Southern Equine Stable’s Salute the Sarge was the winner of Santa Anita Park’s San Miguel Stakes last March 29. The son of Forest Wildcat’s maximum winning distance is 6 1/2 furlongs which questions Salute the Sarge’s ability to race at a longer distance.
The Coolmore Lexington Stakes is scheduled as the 9th race in Keeneland’s April 19 horse racing program. Local post time is 5:44 pm. Included in its undercard is the $100,000 Giant’s Causeway Stakes at 5 1/2 furlongs on turf for 3-year-old and up fillies and mares and the $100,000 Fort Harrod Stakes at 1 5/8 miles for older horses.
