Winchell Thoroughbreds’ Pyro, one of the leading 2008 Kentucky Derby contenders, was installed as the even-money favorite in the morning line odds in the $750,000 Toyota Blue Grass Stakes at Keeneland on Saturday, April 12.
The 1 1/8-mile Blue Grass Stakes is one of the final major prep races for the 2008 Kentucky Derby to be held on May 3 at Churchill Downs.
All carrying 123 pounds, the field of Keeneland’s Toyota Blue Grass Stakes with jockeys and morning line odds:
Cool Coal Man ridden by jockey Kent Desormeaux with morning line odds of 4-1
Kentucky Bear ridden by jockey Jamie Theriot, 50-1
Risen Star Stakes (gr. III) and Louisiana Derby (gr. II) winner Pyro will be racing on Polytrack for the first time. The son of Pulpit, Pyro, turned in his final major prep for the Toyota Blue Grass Stakes by working a half-mile solo in :50.60 at Keeneland early April 7, going the last quarter mile in :23.80 under exercise rider Dominic Terry. Pyro will break from post position 7 with jockey Shaun Bridgmohan aboard.
Robert LaPenta’s Cool Coal Man is the 4-1 second choice. His most recent stakes victory, the Fountain of Youth Stakes (gr. II) at Gulfstream Park was run at the same distance as the Blue Grass Stakes at 1 1/8 miles. Nick Zito trainee, Cool Coal Man, is also starting on Polytrack for the first time. Jockey Kent Desormeaux will be taking the mount.
Also among the Blue Grass Stakes contenders are Eric Fein’s Tampa Bay Derby (gr. III) winner Big Truck and Team Valor International and Vision Racing’s Gotham Stakes (gr. III) winner Visionaire. Both Big Truck and Visionaire are co-third choices on the morning line at odds of 6-1.
Todd Pletcher’s Blue Grass entries are his final hope at having a starter in the Kentucky Derby this year. Cowboy Cal ranks 38th on the graded earnings list with $57,660 in earnings while Monba is 40th with $50,000.
The Toyota Blue Grass Stakes is scheduled as the 9th race in Keeneland’s April 12 horse racing program. Estimated local post time is 5:18 pm EDT. If all 12 horses start, it would be this horse race’s largest field since 1983. Also included in its undercard is the $400,000 Commonwealth Stakes (gr. II) for 3-year-olds and up at 7 furlongs and the $200,000 Jenny Wiley Stakes (gr. II) for 4-year-olds and up at 1 1/16 miles on turf.
