Absolutely Cindy Wins John Battaglia Memorial Stakes at Turfway Park
Longshot Absolutely Cindy, ridden by jockey Orlando Mojica, upset the boys and became the first filly to win the $100,000 John Battaglia Memorial Stakes at Turfway Park Saturday, March 1.
The John Battaglia Memorial Stakes is one of the 2008 Kentucky Derby prep races and also the first stop of the Triple Crown in Turfway Park. Locally, it the last of 3 preps for the Lane’s End Stakes (gr. II), which runs March 22. The race is named for John Battaglia, general manager of Turfway Park when it was known as Latonia. Battaglia envisioned and developed the race that has become the Lane’s End Stakes.
Trained by Keith Kinmon, Absolutely Cindy covered 1 1/16 miles in 1:44.69 and paid $41.60, $13.80 and $6.60. Your Round with rider Victor Lebron is second and paid $5 and $3.20. Third placer Dixie Decision under jockey Dean Sarvis showed $17.20.
A Kentucky-bred by Arch out of Ms. Boucheron, the 3-year-old filly now has a career record of 3-2-3 in 10 starts for career earnings of $163,374. Asked whether he would bring her back on Lane’s End Stakes day, either for the headline race or the Bourbonette (gr. III) for fillies, Kinmon indicated she next would start in the Ashland (gr. I) at Keeneland.
Big Glen came is fourth in Turfway Park’s John Battaglia Memorial Stakes followed by Halo’s King, Mr. Harry, Beneficiary, Cherokee Triangle, Best Buddy, Instill and Briarwood Circle.
