5 Entries In Borderland Derby at Sunland Park on February 16
A field of 5 horses were entered in the $100,000 Borderland Derby, one of the 2008 Kentucky Derby preparatory races, at Sunland Park on Saturday, February 16.
The field of horses participating in Sunland Park’s Borderland Derby at 1 1/16 miles this Saturday with jockeys, weights and morning line odds:
- Capetown Royal ridden by jockey Joe Martinez carries 116 lbs. with odds of 3-1
- Cape Time ridden by jockey Ken Tohill, 116 lbs., 4-1
- Mr. Golden Ruler ridden by jockey Quyet Bui, 116 lbs., 6-1
- Poni Colada ridden by jockey Alfredo Juarez, Jr., 122 lbs., 8-5
- No Jepordy ridden by jockey Ignacio Puglisi, 116 lbs., 5-2
Steve Asmussen’s Poni Colada was the early leader but faded to sixth place in Oaklawn Park‘s Smarty Jones Stakes for 3-year-olds at one mile last January 21. Prior to that, the son of Volponi, Poni Colada drew away for a 3-length win in Zia Park’s Eddy County Stakes November 23. Owned by Bob Zollars and Mark Wagner, the chestnut colt ran ninth in the Kentucky Cup Juvenile (gr. III) two months earlier.
In his most recent start, Henry Dominguez trained Capetown Royal finished 3rd, nearly 9 lenghts behind the runner-up, in the 6 1/2 furlong Riley Allison Futurity at Sunland Park December 30.
The Borderland Derby is scheduled as the 11th race at Sunland Park’s February 16 horse racing program. Estimated post time is 4:55 pm MST.
