2008 Kentucky Oaks at Churchill Downs May 2

Larry Jones trainees, Eight Belles and Proud Spell, lead the morning line odds for the $500,000 Kentucky Oaks (gr. I) at Churchill Downs on the first Friday of May.

The Kentucky Oaks at 1 1/8 miles is the counter part of the Kentucky Derby. In the May 2 Kentucky Oaks, twelve will race for the lilies. Three-year-old fillies and mares racing in the Churchill Downs’ Kentucky Oaks this Friday with jockeys, weight and morning line odds:

  1. Golden Doc A ridden by jockey Kent Desormeaux carries 121 lbs. with odds of 12-1
  2. Absolutely Cindy ridden by jockey Julien Leparoux, 121 lbs., 20-1
  3. Awesome Chic ridden by jockey Robby Albarado, 121 lbs., 20-1
  4. Elusive Lady ridden by jockey Eibar Coa, 121 lbs., 30-1
  5. Rasierra ridden by jockey Jamie Theriot, 121 lbs., 50-1
  6. Country Star ridden by jockey Rafael Bejarano, 121 lbs., 4-1
  7. Little Belle ridden by jockey Rajiv Maragh, 121 lbs., 8-1
  8. Proud Spell ridden by jockey Gabriel Saez, 121 lbs., 7-2
  9. A to the Croft ridden by jockey Calvin Borel, 121 lbs., 20-1
  10. Bsharpsonata ridden by jockey Eric Camacho, 121 lbs., 6-1
  11. Pure Clan ridden by jockey Edgar Prado, 121 lbs., 6-1
  12. Eight Belles ridden by jockey Ramon Dominguez, 121 lbs., 5-2

Fox Hill Farms’ Eight Belles drew the outside post 12 and was listed as the 5-2 morning line favorite. Eight Belles was entered in the Kentucky Oaks as well as the Kentucky Derby. The daughter of Unbridled’s Song, Eight Belles, is expected to run in the 2008 Kentucky Derby unless she draws an outside post against the boys on Wednesday.

2007 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies winner Proud Spell was listed as the 7-2 second choice drawing post position 8 in the Kentucky Oaks. Owned by Brereton Jones, Proud Spell was also entered in the 2008 Kentucky Derby but is a confirmed 2008 Kentucky Oaks starter.

California-bred Golden Doc A was second in the Stonerside Beaumont (gr. IIT) last April 10 on the Polytrack at Keeneland. A month earlier, Golden Doc A ran second in the Santa Anita Oaks (gr. I) at 1 1/16 miles on Cushion Track. Jockey Kent Desormeaux will be riding Golden Doc A in Friday’s Kentucky Oaks for horse trainer Barry Abrams.

The A.P. Indy filly, Little Belle won Keeneland’s Ashland Stakes (gr. I) on April 5. Jocky Rajiv Maragh will be pairing up with Little Belle again in the Kentucky Oaks this Friday.

The Kentucky Oaks is scheduled as the 10th race in Churchill Downs’ May 2 horse racing program. Included in its undercard are the $150,000 Crown Royal American Turf Stakes (gr. III) at 1 1/16 miles on turf for 3-year-olds, the $150,000 Alysheba Stakes (gr. III) at 1 1/16 miles for 3-year-olds and up, the $150,000 Edgewood Stakes at 1 1/16 miles on turf for 3-year-old fillies, the $300,000 Louisville Stakes (gr. II) at 1 1/16 miles for 3-year-old and up fillies and mares, and the $100,000 Aegon Turf Sprint Stakes (gr. III) at 5 furlongs for 3-year-olds and up.
