2008 Belmont Stakes Results & Payouts: Da’ Tara Wins; Big Brown Last
Robert V. LaPenta’s longshot Da’ Tara, ridden by jockey Alan Garcia, wins the $1-million Belmont Stakes Saturday, June 7, at Belmont Park denying Big Brown the Triple Crown.
Trained by Nick Zito, Da’ Tara went wire to wire to beat 8 other Belmont Stakes contenders over 1 1/2 miles, the longest and toughest of the three classics. The 2008 Belmont Stakes finish time was 2:29.65. Da’ Tara paid $79, $28 and $14.80.
Denis of Cork with jockey Robby Albarado up returned $5.40 and $4.10. Anak Nakal, under jockey Julien Leparoux, and Ready’s Echo, under jockey John Velazquez, dead-heated for third and showed $7.60 and $6.20 respectively.
Other 3-year-old horses that ran in the 2008 Belmont Stakes in order of finish: Macho Again, Tale of Ekati, Guadalcanal, Icabad Crane and Big Brown. Casino Drive was scratched.

Purchased for $175,000 at the Fasig-Tipton Sales in Saratoga in August, 2006, Da’ Tara was making his first start at Belmont Park since finishing second to stablemate Anak Nakal in a maiden race last September. The Belmont Stakes is Da’ Tara’s second win after he roke his maiden in his 3rd start going 1 1/8 miles over a sloppy track at Gulfstream Park last January 5.
Big Brown’s path seemingly became easier when Casino Drive, considered to be his main rival, was scratched in the morning because of a bruised left hind hoof.
The bay colt’s disappointing performance followed convincing victories in the Kentucky Derby and Preakness. Big Brown failed on the same track where 10 horses had been beaten since Affirmed won the Triple Crown in 1978.
