Z Humor and Turf War Win $1M Delta Jackpot Stakes at Delta Downs
The 3-2 favorite Z Humor ridden by Garrett Gomez and Turf War ridden by Calvin Borel were inseparable as they crossed the finish line to win the $1 million Boyd’s Gaming Delta Jackpot Stakes in Delta Downs on December 7.
The Delta Jackpot is Louisiana’s most lucrative race. The winners split $800,000.
Z Humor was coming off a fifth-place finish in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile at Monmouth Park on October 27. Z Humor also ran third in the Champagne Stakes and Sapling Stakes this season. His record stands at 2-0-2 in five starts.
Turf War won the Swynford on Polytrack in Canada in September before a 6th place finish on his last start in the 1 1/16-mile Grey Cup on October 8.
Z Humor paid $3.20, $3.40 and $2.80. Turf War returned $28.20 and $29.80. They both ran 1 1/16 miles in 1:45.43. Golden Yank, previously undefeated in three starts for trainer Gary Thomas, finished a neck behind and paid $4.40 to show.
Horses tailing behind were: Racecar Rhapsody, Overextended, St. Joe, Cave’s Valley, Belatron, Take the Money and Cudjo.
