Tiago Top Contender To Breeders’ Cup Classic High Profiler Curlin?
In a short period of time, Tiago, the half brother of the 2005 Kentucky Derby winner Giancomo, achieved an unsual amount of success leading into the 2007 Breeders’ Cup Classic.
On April 7, 2007, Tiago burst onto horse racing’s national stage by winning the Grade I Santa Anita Derby. This triumph was followed by a seventh-place finish in the Kentucky Derby. After skipping the Preakness Stakes, Tiago finished a credible third in the Belmont Stakes. He then rebounded with an authoritative score in the Grade II Swaps Stakes at Hollywood Park.
On September 29, he won the $520,000 Grade I Goodwood Breeders’ Cup Handicap at Santa Anita Park against older horses by a nose over Awesome Gem. This guaranteed the charismatic bay an automatic berth in the Breeder’s Cup Classic.
“Tiago has done an awful lot,†trainer John Shirreffs said with a proud smile at Monmouth Park this week. “He went into the Derby with just four races and he has just matured and developed into a really top-class horse over the last few months. He’s done all the things that you’d hope a horse could do.â€
Tiago’s owners plan to continue running the two-time Grade I winning colt in 2008, and he is likely to be a major force in the Southern California racing circuit as he has proven himself on both Santa Anita and Hollywood Park’s new synthetic tracks.
