Stonestreet Stables Owns 80% of Curlin

Jess Jackson of Stonestreet Stables now has 80% ownership of Curlin, Breeders’ Cup Classic winner and leading candidate for 2007 Horse of the Year, after buying out another partner, investment banker George Bolton. Financial terms of the purchase agreement were not released.

“We could not be happier. To be part of this marvelous horse’s special year has been the highlight of our career in racing,” Jess Jackson said in a statement released December 20. “His consistent record of success in America’s most important races against the very best competition exceeded our wildest expectations…owning 80% of this very special horse is a fantastic way to cap this very special year.”

Earlier this year, Jess Jackson, George Bolton and Satish Sanan of Padua Stables purchased an 80 percent interest in Curlin for a reported $3.5 million from original owner Midnight Cry Stables, which bought the colt for $57,000 in 2005.

In a deal announced November 6, Jess Jackson and George Bolton bought out the interest held by Padua Stables in a private sale.

Jackson, who is the founder of the Kendall-Jackson Winery, owns Stonestreet Stables along with his wife, Barbara Banke. The sale leaves Jess Jackson and his wife, Barbara Banke, as co-owners of Curlin with Midnight Cry Stables, which is tied up in a legal battle involving 418 people suing the horse’s original owners over a legal settlement.

Two of Midnight Cry’s owners, Shirley Cunningham Jr. and William Gallion, are in jail awaiting trial. They are accused of skimming $64 million that should have gone to their clients in the $200 million settlement over the diet drug fen-phen case.

The 3-year-old son of Smart Strike, Curlin has been outstanding in 2007. His career highlights include winning the Breeders’ Cup Classic at Monmouth Park as well as winning the Preakness Stakes, Jockey Club Gold Cup, Arkansas Derby, and Rebel Stakes.

While Curlin’s racing future has yet to be determined, the breeding rights for the colt are estimated between $20 million and $30 million. Jess Jackson said in the statement that Curlin’s health is good and he will remain in light training under trainer Steve Asmussen.

    Hi,

I am canadian and like thousands of fans of Curlin I follow him closely.

This is such a nice horse, he did a lot for the business. I would love to see this horse Curlin retired……he still sound, fit and so healthy…….HE DESERVES time off, time to look at mares, to rest from training. THis idea to bring him to France is NOT A GOOD IDEA. Don’t forget what he already did for you.

I love Curlin and even not see him anymore and knowing he is ok is enough for me.

    Francine
