Slew’s Tizzy Will Skip Kentucky Derby; Prepares for Preakness Stakes
Coolmore Lexington Stakes (gr. II) winner, Slew’s Tizzy, will skip the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I) on May 5 at Churchill Downs and instead will begin preparation for the second Triple Crown jewel, Preakness Stakes, according to trainer Greg Fox.
“We decided to skip the Derby, we’ll give him the four weeks between races and run him back in the Preakness (gr.I),†said Fox, who trains the son of Tiznow for owner Joseph LaCombe. “It’s tempting, of course, he’s in perfect shape, but he’s still flesh and blood. In some ways it’s a tough decision to make, in some ways it’s really not; I’ve been to the Derby plenty of times as a spectator and I’ll be back again this year.â€
With Slew’s Tizzy off the list of potential Kentucky Derby contenders, Jamie Sanders-trainee Teuflesberg is assured a place in the field as he moves into 20th position with $122,942 in graded earnings.
