Romance Is Diane Wins Bayakoa Handicap By Half A Length

Romance Is Diane ridden by jockey Michael Baze dominated Hollywood Park as she kept her lead throughout the race to win the $150,000 Bayakoa Handicap Saturday, December 1.

Third-choice Romance Is Diane is one of the three Grade I winners in the field of five fillies and mares. The Bayakoa Handicap is the second straight race she won with front-running tactics.

“I just tried to stay patient with her and save as much as I could for the end,” Michael Baze said. “Even though they were going quick, she was just cruising down the backside. I was trying not to fight her because she wanted to go. When I let her, she sure did kick into gear at the head of the lane.”

Trained by Mike Mitchell, Romance is Diane covered 1 1/16 miles in 1:40.9 and returned $7, $3.40 and $3.20. Tough Tiz’s Sis with Garrett Gomez came second and paid $3 and $2.20. Fonce De with Tyler Baze took third place and paid $3.60 to show.

Tailing them are Grain of Truth and Sugar Shake. Lavender Sky and Sohgol were scratched.
