Doctor Dino A Head Victory Over Sunriver To Win Man o’ War Stakes
NEW YORK (AP) — Doctor Dino concluded a two-race visit to the United States with a head victory over Sunriver in the $500,000 Man o’ War, the richest of three Grade 1 stakes Saturday at Belmont Park.
Alexander Tango from Ireland captured $219,800 Garden City Stakes for 3-year-old fillies on the turf while Ginger Punch won the $285,000 Ruffian Handicap for fillies and mares.
Doctor Dino, a 5-year-old bred in France, finished third in the Arlington Million last month. He heads home Monday on a winning note.
“He’s a model of consistency” said trainer Richard Gibson. “Coming off the last turn, I was sure he was going to win.”
Doctor Dino came charging through the lane to edge Sunriver, who had set the pace in the 1 3-8 mile race on the firm turf course. The time was 2:12.26 as Doctor Dino got his sixth win in 21 career starts.
Doctor Dino, ridden by Olivier Peslier, one of France’s top jockeys, paid $9.70, $4.30 and $2.90. Sunriver returned $3.90 and $2.90. Grand Courturier paid $4.60.
Alexander Tango also uncorked a big rally to win her U.S. debut. Shaun Bridgmohan guided the filly to a 3/4 -length win over Bit of Whimsey with Sharp Susan third. Trained by Tommy Stack, Alexander Tango paid $13.60 to win while running the 1 1-8 miles in 1:48.97.
Ginger Punch won a third straight stakes in the Ruffian. The 4-year-old trained by Bobby Frankel posted a 3/4 -length win over Miss Shop with Teammate third.
The time was a stakes record 1:40.25 for the 1 1-16 miles on the fast track, eclipsing Riboletta’s mark of 1:40.35 set in 2000.
Ginger Punch, ridden by Rafael Bejarano, paid $3.50 to win while earning her sixth win in 12 career starts.
