Dearest Tricksi Nabs La Brea Stakes at Santa Anita Park
Making her stakes debut, Dearest Tricksi ridden by jockey Mike Smith led the field of 11 horses and won the last Grade I stakes race of the year, the $250,000 La Brea Stakes, at Santa Anita Park on Saturday, December 29.
The 7 furlong test on Cushion Track for 3-year-old fillies was covered in 1:21.09. Trained by John Sadler for owner Tom Mankiewicz, Dearest Tricksi took a 1 1/2 length victory and paid $10.80, $6.60 and $4.20. Unspoken Word with jockey Rafael Bejarano finished second and returned $9.80 and $5.80. Third placer Glorified with jockey Jose Valdivia Jr. aboard paid $4 to show.
Dearest Tricksi has won eight of 12 horse races. The $150,000 first prize for the La Brea Stakes more than doubled her previous career total to $280,500.
The favorite Sindy With an S came fourth followed by Swiss Diva, Ashley’s Kitty, Look Deep, Frisk Her, Cathrine’s Hope, Pinata and Macadamia. Dawn After Dawn, Shriek and Silky Smooth were scratched.
The La Brea Stakes is the first leg of the three-race La Canada stakes series that resumes with the Grade II 1 1/16-mile El Encino on January 13 and the nine-furlong Grade II La Canada on February 10 for 4-year-old fillies.
