Daytona Leads The San Gabriel Handicap at Santa Anita Park

Irish-bred Daytona earned his third consecutive major victory in Southern California as he wins the $150,000 San Gabriel Handicap (gr. IIT) at Santa Anita Park on Sunday, December 30.

Daytona earned $90,000 for Sunday’s win for a career total of $551,390. It is his fifth win in eleven starts.

Ridden by jockey Mike Smith and trained by Dan Hendricks, Daytona covered 1 1/8 miles on turf in 1:47.57 and paid $6.60, $3.80 and $2.80. Proudinsky with jockey Rafael Bejarano aboard is three-quarters behind and returned $4.20 and $3.20. Medici Code under jockey Martin Pendroza came in third and paid $3 to show.

Hall of Fame rider Mike Smith also grabbed the final Grade I stakes race of the year at Santa Anita Park’s La Brea Stakes for 3-year-old fillies a day earlier with Dearest Trickski.

Horses that also ran in the San Gabriel Handicap are: Storm Military, Lang Field and Sensational Humor.
