Curlin, 2007 Preakness Stakes winner, dominated Monmouth Park Saturday, October 27th to win the $5 million Breeders’ Cup Classic. His performance settled the question on who should have the honor of being the 2007 Horse of the Year.
Curlin covered 1 1/4 miles in 2:00.59 and paid $10.80, $5.20 and $4.20. He is ridden by Robby Albarado and trained by Steve Asmussen. It is their first Breeders’ Cup win.
“It’s incredible (training my first Breeders’ Cup winner),” said Steve Asmussen, Curlin’s trainer. “It’s all about Curlin. He’s the one who did it. (The track) was a huge concern. I was extremely nervous about it, extremely nervous.
“Robby gave him the chance. He got him on his feet. First time by (the stands), he was carrying Robby nicely and he ran extremely well from there. He is an incredible horse.”
Hard Spun, who took an early lead, finished second. Awesome Gem came in late as he passed 2007 Kentucky Derby winner Street Sense near the finish line.
Tiago came in fifth followed by Any Given Saturday, Lawyer Ron, and Diamond Stripes.
Tragedy stroke as George Washington injured his right front ankle and had to be euthanized on the track at the request of trainer Aidan O’Brien. Tarpaulins were brought out to prevent the crowd from seeing the scene.
“Typically these injuries occur in the last part of the race,” Dr. C Wayne McIlwraith said. “They are more fatigued so they have got less support to the joint. And that’s when the injuries normally occur.”
George Washington’s death cast a pall on this otherwise remarkable event.
