No Triple Crown winner yet again this year as Curlin steals the Preakness Stakes title from Kentucky Derby winner Street Sense on Saturday at the Pimlico Race Course.
After the defeat, Street Sense’s trainer Carl Nafzger has expressed disinterest in the Belmont Stakes on June 9.
“Right now, I don’t think we probably will,” Nafzger said Sunday. “There’s not really any reason to go there right now.”
Curlin is a rising 3-year-old star after just five career starts is the likely favorite coming to Belmont Park. The chestnut colt won the Rebel Stakes (gr. III) by 5 1/4 and the Arkansas Derby by 10 ½ before running third in the Derby, beaten eight lengths.
But trainer Steve Asmussen still won’t commit his horse for Belmont.
Hard Spun, second in the Derby and third in the Preakness, likely will try again in the Belmont. Trainer Larry Jones figures it’s his turn to win. “We got beat by two really good horses, we sure don’t have anything to be ashamed of,” Jones said.
Curlin paid $8.80, $3.80, and $2.80 while Street Sense returned $3 and $2.40. Hard Spun held on for third and paid $3.
