Sports Illustrated Name Barbaro Sportsman of the Year Candidate
2006 Kentucky Derby winner, Barbaro, has been named candidate for Sports Illustrated’s 2006 Sportsman of the Year award. The winner will be announced Dec. 4 and featured in the Dec. 11 issue of the magazine.
The 3-year-old colt gained national attention for his commanding Derby win, but it has been his fight for survival after his near fatal injury in the May 20 Preakness Stakes (gr. I) that has kept him in the spotlight.
He continues to improve at the New Bolton Center following the removal of his right hind leg cast Nov. 6. His left hind foot, which had laminitis, is also improving.
Barbaro’s veterinarian, Dr. Dean Richardson, was Sports Illustrated writer Franz Linz’s personal choice for the honor.

I think Barbaro should be Sport’s Illustrated’s Sportsman Of The Year. He is an amazing animal to have survived as he did first a broken leg and then laminitis which is often a killer in an uninjured horse. What a horse!

I am a horse owner in the state of Vermont. Many people do not understand the trauma inflicted on Barbaro. He has proved in his racing, as well as his survival that he deserves to be sportsman of the year. Many years of pasture and mares, you deserve it all.
